Test Pilots
With the adherence to modernization programs (MLU) through the MNFP, it became imperative for the Portuguese Air Force to contribute as a partner to the program in many aspects, including manpower. As part of this, due to the fact the aircraft's operational capabilities are in permanent evolution, the need arose to contribute with Test Pilots, as these are essential elements responsible for the operationalization and validation of programs from a Development, Testing, and Evaluation perspective (validation) of modernizations.
In 2005, Portugal gained the capability to plan and conduct test flights after the successful completion of the Test Pilot Course at the National Test Pilot School in Edwards, USA, by Major Pilot-Aviator Francisco Dionísio. This capability allowed the Air Force to collaborate directly with partner countries, as well as with the industry responsible for contributing to the evolution of the F-16 MLU
For various periods, Portugal maintained Test Pilots at Edwards Air Force Base, USA, stationed in the 416th Flight Test Squadron, responsible for the development and testing of MLU programs.
Additionally, multiple operational acceptance programs (Operational Test & Evaluation) were conducted in Portugal, led by national Test Pilots and Engineers.
Since 2005, new Test Pilots and Engineers have been trained, contributing not only to support the development and testing programs of the F-16 aircraft but also other weapon systems used by the Air Force.
