Each evolution is designated with an alphanumeric code. Currently, there are two series: the M-series (for modernization) and the S-series (for sustainment). These series are distinguished by the entity responsible for their development, with the M-series developed by Lockheed Martin and the S-series by the USAF.
The initial version of Portuguese F-16 MLUs was the M2, and currently, the S3.25 version is undergoing development and testing, and is set to be implemented during the course of 2025.
This ongoing modernization of operational capabilities, leading to improvements in lethality, survivability, and connectivity with other platforms (including 5th-generation aircraft), is unique to the MNFP framework. It ensures that Portuguese F-16 fighters have access to the most advanced technology that their sensors and equipment can effectively utilize.
The MLU program, as conceptualized by the USA, aims to optimize the use of an aircraft throughout its life cycle, ensuring it remains operationally and militarily relevant and capable until its phase-out. This approach underscores the commitment to maximizing the effectiveness and longevity of the F-16 fleet through continuous upgrades and enhancements.
