The Beginning
In 1994, the beginning of F-16 operations was marked by the activation of Squadron 201 "Falcões", under the command of Major Pilot-Aviator Alves Francisco, its first commander.
At that time, the squadron consisted of 6 pilots trained in the United States, one USAF pilot on exchange (Pilot Exchange), and the first group of 6 national pilots undergoing training within Portugal.
Under Major Alves Francisco's leadership, Squadron 201 committed to training new pilots while developing all the essential documentation to support the operational unit. This documentation included syllabi, Standard Operating Procedures, and Manuals of Operational Tactics, amongst others, many of which remain relevant in the daily operations of Portugal's F-16 units.
This historic moment reaffirmed an unwavering commitment to operational excellence, readiness, and effectiveness in operating the F-16 aircraft.
The reactivation of the "Falcões", now designated as Squadron 201, represented not only an operational achievement but also a source of national pride. It underscored the modernization and effectiveness of Portuguese aerial capabilities, serving as a clear affirmation of sovereignty and the ability to defend national airspace.
